If you look around on public transport, in cafes and parks, you’ll find someone staring into a laptop computer screen. On any given morning a number of passengers on commuter trains will have already started their day at the ‘office’. Some are answering emails, others hurriedly working on the task ahead.
But the term ‘office’ can be a loose one. For those working independently or on the fly, offices are wherever you can sit down.
So, if you do work on the run, where’s the best place to take your laptop? Increasingly, the cafe-working trend is growing. They’ve been coined the ‘new nomadics’ and ‘mobile merchants’. You will see them in most cafés carrying out their day’s work surrounded by empty latte glasses and half eaten muffins. For many, productivity seems to rise in a more social environment. But there are unspoken rules to heed:
• No chatting: While it is a more social environment, you don’t leave the house to start up a string of conversations. Anything more than a short exchange and greeting and the productivity you want to boost by leaving home starts to wane.
• Keep your privacy: If you’re at a café to work, be strict with yourself. Avoid logging into your bank account and doing the chores that might be better left when you’re in your own space.
• Consider the bandwidth: You’re at a café that offers Wifi but this doesn’t mean it’s open slather for downloading all those files you’ve been avoiding doing at home. Anything big will also affect the connection of those around you and you might not get the same friendly "good morning" on your following visit.
• Order regularly: If you’re going to sit in a café for six hours you need to order more than one coffee. Something every couple of hours is the understood etiquette.
In this case, office rental comes down to a coffee bean exchange. If renting a space through lattes appeals, computer rental might also be something to consider. The benefits are similar. No set up fees, no upfront payment, no ‘maintenance’ costs, and no ‘locking in’. If you’re looking to
rent a laptop, remember that customers have flexible term options to choose from.
