Over the years, Saab has established a strong image and reputation in the automobile industry. Lauded for its green technology, innovation, and advanced ergonomics, the brand has always been well respected and admired. But Saab, which was originally a Swedish company, has had a tough time of it. In fact, at one point it looked as though Saab cars had reached the end of the line. Fans of the brand anxiously waited to see if anything could save the classic manufacturer. With the much relieved sale of Saab to Spyker in early 2010, Saab enthusiasts breathed a sigh of relief and are now eagerly anticipating what the future holds for the new brand.

Saab's Sale to Spyker

General Motors bought Saab in 1990, but just twenty years later, in 2010, the American company announced it was planning to sell off its asset as its own fortunes were floundering in light of the Global Financial Crisis.

Despite substantial interest from various corporations in 2009, including from the Swedish car maker Koenigsegg and Chinese manufacturer BAIC, talks faltered and then finally collapsed. Suddenly, the Dutch company Spyker announced its intention to save the brand. But negotiations were so fraught that GM went so far as to say that Saab cars would likely be discontinued by 2010. Nevertheless, GM agreed to accept new bids before January 2010, which sparked a new round of offers. Several companies threw their hats into the ring, but Spyker’s revised proposals were finally accepted and the sale officially took place on 23 February 2010.
