First released as a fleet car in Japan in July 2009, the Mitsubishi i-MIEV is an innovative compact car that creates zero emissions and runs completely on electric power, making it far cheaper to operate than comparable hybrid vehicles. The name is an acronym for Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle and reflects the forward-thinking design elements that set the i-MIEV apart from other cars in its class. The Mitsubishi i MIEV comfortably seats four passengers with room to spare for gear and cargo. A longer, more streamlined wheelbase allows batteries to nestle securely under the floorboards, providing more room for passengers and cargo; this also lowers the centre of gravity for this advanced vehicle to improve handling on treacherous curves. Advanced braking technology offers more stopping power on steep inclines, and the rear wheel drivetrain of the i-MIEV makes the uphill climb a breeze.
Vital statistics
Engine: 47 kilowatt electric motor with 330 volt lithium-ion battery array
Torque: 180 Nm
Top speed: 130 km/hour
Maximum range: 140 to 160 km
Charging time: Seven hours on household current, fast charge to 80% in 30 minutes
Advanced environmental features
The Mitsubishi i-MIEV incorporates a number of innovative green technologies, including:
• High density lithium-ion battery array – These advanced power sources produce no emissions and weigh less than comparable gas engines, allowing the vehicle to operate longer between charges.
• Smaller, high-torque engine – The electric engine produces higher torque and better performance than the comparable petrol-powered engine.
• Minimal noise signature – The i-MIEV produces almost no noise pollution, making it an outstanding choice in crowded urban environments.
• Multiple charging system options – Mitsubishi’s electric battery system can be recharged using regular 100V or 200V household current or through the exclusive quick-recharge system for faster operability.
Public reception
The Mitsubishi i-MIEV has already been released to a number of markets including Japan, Hong Kong, and New Zealand and has received near-universal acclaim for its advanced power system and ecologically-friendly design; it is expected to arrive in the United States sometime in 2011.
Meanwhile the i-MIEV is currently available in limited release in Australia and is yet to be made available for sale. Selected individuals were allowed to trial the limited release on a 3 year lease. Only 110 i-MIEV cars were shipped to Australia in 2010, but increasing demand for green-friendly vehicles will likely boost those figures for 2011. This should cement Mitsubishi's status as a leading auto manufacturer for the Australian market and allow the company to build on the exceptional success of its Lancer, Triton, and Outlander models currently available at your local retailer, including
Mitsubishi Castle Hill.
