A day out at the races is a great excuse for the citizenry to don outrageous, stylish costumes, and for ladies to wear the most resplendent headwear that they can find. In fact, hats often steal focus from the main event on the turf, and keep milliners busy all year long. Here are a few different suggestions in case you plan to participate in Fashions on the Field this year.
• Mix it up - Roses would seem like an obvious choice for a hat theme, as Flemington racecourse is covered with over 200 varieties. But if you want to be trendy, stick with more of an abstract theme. Play with sculptural elements, such as oversized brims and exaggerated crowns for a chic, up-to-date look.
• Go vintage - Another trend is vintage glamour. A pillbox hat set at a jaunty angle, covered with nostalgic accents, such as brooches and feathers will wow the crowd at post time. Big bows, which were so big in the mid-twentieth century, have made a huge comeback. You could even design your own hat with these elements, and make a spectacular entrance.
• Use colours and bling - Use a gorgeous shade of midnight blue netting set with rhinestones for that couture ‘Woman of Mystery’ look. Built-up netting on the crown repeats the glamorous theme. The glittering gems will put a sparkle in all of your admirers’ eyes. Elbow gloves and a chic black frock complete your persona.
• Keep it simple - Many new entrants in the hat sweepstakes are more minimalist items.
Hair accessories, such as fascinators, worn either with or without a hair band, exude confidence and a sense of fun. In case you’ve never worn one, a fascinator is a very delicate, feathered hat placed carefully at a strategic location on the head. In the evening, these items are known as cocktail
hats.
Follow these tips, and you might find yourself photographed more often than the equestrians!
