Keeping the boys entertained and engaged when the weather outside is less than accommodating is no small feat. Sure, it's easy to settle them down in front of their favourite videos or TV shows, but rainy days also afford plenty of opportunities to keep them occupied and entertained with activities that keep them actively involved in play.
* Keep a Rainy Day Toy Box
Rather than watch the boys jumble through the same old playthings, keep a separate set of special toys and games solely for those unfriendly weather days. Instead of being bored by the idea of being cooped up with the usual, they can be excited when the skies start looking glum because savvy parents pull out the Rainy Day Toy Box! Fill the box with new colouring books and crayons, board games, cards and toys that can only be played with when heading outside is not an option.
*Arts and Crafts Projects
On those sunny days when the little ones are at play, use your free time to search the web for age-appropriate arts and crafts projects. Stock a box with project directions, craft paper, markers, glue, pens, glitter, yarn, crayons and other assorted supplies. When the rain starts pull out a project sheet and let the kids go to work. Craft projects are something parents and children can do together and they end up with a finished project to adorn the refrigerator or give to other family members as gifts.
* Create a Village
Hearken back to the days before digital technology took over children’s' play and help them set up a village for their
remote controlled trains. Children can be entertained for hours setting up the town with the
trains’ components or creating their own. Use small cardboard boxes for buildings and spend time creating cardboard cut outs of family members and friends to board the train along its route. When rains persist, keep the village set up and add new elements each day.
With a little forethought and advanced planning for rainy days, the kiddos can have just as much fun inside as out!
