Choosing an animal companion of any kind is never a decision that should be taken lightly. The relationship between horse and owner is one of the more special bonds, and it is just that - a relationship. You wouldn’t enter into a relationship with another person without considering personalities so why would you get a horse without considering personality? There are certainly important things to consider when looking for a horse.

1. The first thing to look at is yourself. What kind of personality do you have? Are you someone who is quiet, shy, and reserved? Or are you someone who is more aggressive and bold? It is important that this self-evaluation is honest. If need be, ask another horse rider or friend what they think.

2. The second thing to do is evaluate your lifestyle. How much time is there to devote to the horse? Also, why are you entering into this relationship with a new horse? Different equestrian disciplines require differing amounts of time and everyone has at least some social, familial, or career obligations. Really take note of what you hope to get out of an equine partnership and then evaluate which obligations can be forfeited to invest time in a new horse.

3. Think about what the goals of the partnership are. Are you looking for a companion or do you dream of being a world champion? It is important to have dreams and goals for your relationship with your horse, but these goals need to be realistic. Many people have expectations of their horse but sometimes do not realistically evaluate themselves. Honest evaluation of your own skills and what it will take to achieve those skills is important. No horse can make up for skills the rider lacks

4. Think about the discipline you are interested in and what breeds are most suited for that discipline. While many breeds do have some characteristic personalities, there is a wide range within breeds. Western riders might want to choose an appaloosa, while English riders may want a Dutch Warmblood. An endurance rider should look for Arabians for sale. These are just some examples.

The most important thing to do is research before buying a horse. Realise how much time and commitment is involved, yet how rewarding the relationship can be. Consult with an unbiased equestrian professional, not just someone who is trying to make money by selling a horse.
