Sydney may be a world city, but it’s also home to some of the best bargain shopping around. With many markets and a bevy of vintage shops scattered around the city, there’s a lot of variety for shopaholics and bargain hunters.
Here are a few tips to help you navigate the city’s best shopping spots for great deals.
Vintage shopping
There are a number of Sydney suburbs that specialise in vintage items. Surry Hills, Darlinghurst and Glebe are all vintage hotspots. A great place to pick up vintage items is the Surry Hills markets, held on the first Saturday of the month. Vintage clothing, furniture and accessories abound, as do the quirky and eccentric Surry Hills locals –people watching is a major part of the enjoyment!
There are also a number of other Sydney markets to choose from around the city –
- Glebe's Saturday markets feature New Age Bohemian and recycled items as well as music and books. It also has many new and hand-made items. There is also often live music.
- Paddington markets are held at the Paddington Uniting Church every Saturday. This is a popular place for fashionistas, with 250 stalls featuring a wide range of offerings including art, fashion, crafts, jewelry, home wares, health and beauty products, baby items, furniture, food, and much more.
- The Bondi markets are held every Sunday at the Bondi Public School at the north end of the famous Bondi Beach. There are many vintage goods and second-hand fashion and accessories on offer, as well as flowers, books, music, hand-made items, and crafts. Many local young designers showcase their wares here.
There are a number of Glebe, Surry Hills and Paddington hotel options to choose from when visiting Sydney that will put you within easy access of all the market action.
The famous Garage Sale Trail
If you’re in Sydney on April 10, you’ll get to experience the Garage Sale Trail, which is part of the largest garage sale in Australia. In Surry Hills and Glebe, hundreds of households register to be listed on the garage sale trail, which is issued by the city of Sydney and pinpoints participating ‘garages’ on this one day. Grab a copy of the map, and set out to pick up some bargains from a number of different households in these suburbs. It’s also a great way to see parts of your city! If you’re in Sydney during this time and looking for
accommodation, Surry Hills has a range of options to choose from.
